DID YOU KNOW?

Effective July 1, 2025, CRNAs in the State of Kansas will have prescriptive authority.

On April 4th of this year, Governor Kelly signed Senate Bill 67 expanding the scope of practice for Nurse Anesthetists in the State.  Governor Kelly said, “This legislation will help address our health care workforce shortage and increase access to care”. This bill amended the law pertaining to certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs) to prescribe durable medical equipment, as well as prescribe and administer any drug consistent with their education and qualifications.

Specifically, Senate Bill 67 stated:

  • CRNAs shall not prescribe, procure or administer any anesthetic agent, except for what is listed in K.S.A. 65-1158 https://www.kslegislature.gov/li/b2025_26/measures/documents/sb67_enrolled.pdf .
  • CRNAs shall not perform or induce an abortion or prescribe, procure or administer drugs for an abortion. They shall not dispense drugs but may request, receive and sign for professional samples and may distribute professional samples to patients.
  • Any drug that is a controlled substance shall be prescribed, procured or administered in accordance with the uniform controlled substance act. https://www.kslegislature.gov/li_2012/b2011_12/measures/documents/summary_sb_134_2012.pdf
  • To prescribe controlled substances, the CRNA needs to register with the federal drug enforcement administration and comply with federal drug enforcement administration requirements related to controlled substances.

As CRNAs obtain DEA certificates, please make sure to send that information to MPR so we may update our records and begin ongoing monitoring.
