In response to the opioid epidemic, The Kansas Board of Healing Arts has implemented a new continuing medical education (CME) credit for MD/DO/DC, Category III. The specific new requirements are listed below:

The new Category III continuing medical education requirement requires a live presentation or internet-based educational activity that meets the requirements of Category I or II, with the additional content requirement of:

opioid conference(1) acute or chronic pain management
(2) the appropriate prescribing of opioids; or
(3) the use of prescription drug monitoring programs

The addition of Category III does not increase the total number of continuing education hours required or change the process for renewal of a license. Each licensee, at renewal, shall certify they have completed one of the following:

  • During the 18-month period immediately preceding the license expiration, the person completed at least 50 credits of continuing education, of which at least one credit shall be in category III, at least 20 credits in category I, and the remaining credits in category II.
  • During the 30-month period immediately preceding the license expiration, the person completed at least 100 credits of continuing education, of which at least two credits shall be in category III, at least 40 credits in category I, and the remaining credits in category II.
  • During the 42-month period immediately preceding the license expiration, the person completed at least 150 credits of continuing education, of which at least three credits shall be in category III, at least 60 credits in category I, and the remaining credits in category II.

Please make sure you meet the new requirement when your Kansas license is renewed this year. Here is a link for an online opioid conference scheduled for May 12 from 5:30 – 9:00 pm that meets this requirement. https://www.eeds.com/portal_live_events.aspx?ConferenceID=287533
